Fresh water

Fit a lever action shower head, that you only squirt to wet down, turn off, soap up, then rinse off. Standing under a continuously running shower every day for several minutes is silly. Never mind heating all that water. Do you really need a shower every day ?

You can pay silly prices from caravan shops, or just search for a Shattaf. Same thing.

Use a flannel.

Brush your teeth with a mugful of water, not under a running tap.

Carry baby wipes for if you are getting low, or a wipe over before bed.

Don't flush the loo. a small pump up garden sprayer with a few drops of e.g Zooflora does a better job with a few squirts, then a proper clean with a Dettol Wipe (or spray with the Shattaf) only when required.

Use eco chemicals in the cassette so that you can be certain you won't poison septic tanks, treatment works, or aquatic lifeforms.

In suitable places, just pee outside and even line your loo with a "large dog" poo bag, then put them in public poo bins, it's the same stuff.

The Fiamma bidet is also good, wash and shave with a couple of mugs of hot water from the kettle having put it in the basin, then place into the loo to wash nether regions, feet etc.

Underwear, shirts, other clothes get chucked into a plastic tub with a screw on lid (the sort canoeists use) filled with a capful of bio detergent and water then accumulate until wash day (actually rinsing out day), if travelling along they slosh about and just need a couple of rinses, otherwise a good shake each time you add something. Even do the rinsing and wringing out in a public loo basin (take you're own plug).

You don't need to fill your washing up bowl full, wipe off the worst with kitchen towel then use a little water and detergent to sponge over, then some fresh to rinse off.

I no longer usually fill my 100 litre tank full, that's 1/10 tonne of water to lug about, half that is usually sufficient for two plus dog, for several days.

This is what the wife got me :)

It will not always be sunshine when wild camping, it will rain, so geta bucket and catch the rainwater run off from your vehical. Filter this water through a muslin cloth to remove any solids and tip the water into your vans tank.add a couple of

Yes, we collect runoff from the roof.
But usually just use it straight away.
Muslin cloth, we have, so ahead.....

Sterilising tablets to the tank and the water is then fit for purpose, the bucket will refill in no time to repeat the process.

I meant to add sterilising tablets I'm my post but pressed the wrong button. We do not drink our tank water but could as it is OK. Just buy 5 litres for drinking neat, boil other water for tea and coffee, using water from local sources. Surprising how quickly the bucket fills in heavy rain, not here in Portugal at the moment, they are on the verge of drought not looking good for them.

Recommendations for Sterilising tablets would be helpful..Pretty Please

I'd be very cautious about using rain water run off from the van, which could be contaminated with road dirt, bird droppings, chemicals used to wash the vehicle etc.

Adding tablets to supposedly "sterilize" it may knock off some basic bugs, but leave other things in it, and give false reassurance.

Sadly even taking water from what seem to be clear streams etc. in wild places nowadays is a risk, filters are available that will take out all bacteria, amoeba and cysts (cryptosporidia, giardia etc.) but cannot remove viruses. They are not particularly expensive, the small ones start at about £25. Sawyer is the best known brand.

Basic tablets are nothing more than a way of chlorinating the water. Specialist tablets or other treatments can do much more, total sterilisation, but too costly to routinely treat a whole tank.

If doubtful about the water source I treat the tank with "Oasis 167mg Emergency Water Purification Tablets Pack of 100 Tablets - Treats 2000 Litres" as a basic precaution, which only cost £4.50 from Amazon. These are just basic chlorine tablets

Each tablet (4.5p) treats 20 litres.

They also make 8.5mg ones, each of which treats 1 litre of water, which I routinely use when hillwalking

Use freshly treated chlorinated water for not just drinking, but washing vegetables, brushing teeth etc.

The next step up is something like Micropur, such as https://www.boots.com/boots-micropur-water-purification-tablets-extra-strength-50-tablets-10113023p which release chlorine dioxide, much more powerful, as well as silver, But now you are talking 16p/litre.

OTT if using tap water in Europe, but if travelling further afield just a sensible precaution.

These are the needs for us per person per day.

Water for drinking 2.5ltr
Water for cooking 0.5ltr
Water for dish washing 2.0ltr
Water for loo 0.1ltr (we use a garden sprayer with pink in)
Water for washing 2.0 ltr

So for 2 people and our 100ltr tank we can go 6 to 7 days between fills if we do not shower.

Water for shower average 7ltr so 14ltr per day for 2 people so every day we both shower takes 1 day off our refill days. So 2 showers each between fills reduces duration to 4 to 5 days between fills.

Cassette if sole use and no public facilities utilised then 2 days. Emptying rarely extends to 3 days. We do have 2 cassettes so basically we never have to go into panic mode to empty.
