Hi everyone, I'm in the process of getting my van ready to use for the first time. Should hopefully be heading off the end of this week for a few days. I've started putting basic food, tins etc in my van ready and was wondering how everyone stores things like rice pasta etc. I was just going to fill my plastic containers up and leave them in the van ready for this and future trips. But I've just been told that anything stored in plastic air tight containers will smell funny and I'm best to just put it in the van in the packaging it came in. I was just after advise on how you store yours and also what you leave in your vans all year round ? Thank you for your help regards Richard

Those big Bockwurst Jars you get from Lidls are really good for dry storage they're 8 inches high and about 4 inches around. I store rice, pasta porridge and flour in them.....If you want them all right away though that's a fair few hotdogs to get through!

Leave root vegetables in the ground and pheasant partridge etc on the perch until the last possible moment. likewise trout vtastes better within an hour of being tickled.:lol-053::fun:

I don't think it matter if you leave it in the packaging or put it in containers. The only time I would bother with containers is if I used some and the packaging remaining was not very airtight. In any case, as soon as you cook with all those lovely herbs and spices, it will take on the smell and flavour of those.

Our van is fully loaded at all times as we spend a lot of time away in it, Clothes Bedding and food, food stuffs are stored in airtight plastic boxes where necessary and as we rotate every thing we have no problems, same with the water tank, never empty just add a sterilising tablet from time to time no problems, we don't drink the water from the tank though as we use plastic 5 litre bottles to store drinking water Simples.

With rice, pasta, sugar, etc - I just leave them in their packages/bags, which I seal at the top with a clothes peg (just as I do at home - I have no special containers for anything as they're usually bulky or awkwardly-shaped, and therefore take up space).

The thing that I pay more attention to is chilled stuff. On my recent 10-day trip, the only real perishables I had in the fridge were margarine and milk, plus some vacuum-packed fish - but I kept the fridge going anyway, in case. I met some people who didn't bother with their fridge and just kept stuff in a plastic bag in an outside compartment, such as the leisure battery compartment. I suppose that's ok in the colder months - but I like to be safe!

For me the main thing is that if you are storing anything in the overhead cupboards, make sure they are in plastic crates / baskets (available from B+Q, Tesco and similar places) or similar so that they don't fall out. I once saw nasty damage to a worktop after a tin had fallen out.
