Requirements for all UK citizens driving abroad from 29 March 2019 - GOV.UK

..... "From 29 March 2019, in the event that there is no EU Exit deal, you may need an IDP in addition to your UK driving licence to drive in EU and EEA countries.

If you hold a UK driving licence you should not need an IDP to drive in Ireland from 29 March 2019 as Ireland does not currently require IDPs to be held by driving licence holders from non-EU countries...."

N.B. [IDP = International Driving Permit - £5.50 from the Post Office]

My April EU trip has been trumped by jobs around the house that SWMBO has decreed are more important.
Next EU trip is likely to be Sep/Oct 2019 so by then we should have definitive answers.

But in the meantime, (taken from the same song as my signature line) this is a site worth monitoring.

I wouldn't hold your breath judging by progress so far! :lol-049::lol-061: :)

We all needed an International Driving Permit and an Insurance Green Card when I started driving in Europe. It was no great hardship then and I can't see any reason for a song and dance about it now.

If no deal you could be faced with having to carry 2,3 or even 4 licences. A complete shambles.

Why. Surely the permit covers the whole of Europe. It did in the past. It is only a copy of your licence with different languages.

2 for EU EEA. 4 max, the world.
Cyprus, Iceland Ireland, Malta, Spain you'll (may) need a different IDL to the rest of the EU.

Be like going on a proper trip again. :p

Yes France and Spain are on different documents so if you come down to Spain from the tunnel I think you will need both

You will need your UK licence as now, plus up to three different IDP's for Europe.

The IDL for France covers Morocco, and the IDL for Spain covers Turkey and Russia. Thats the escape roots sorted.

Good info . Dare say those travelling when [more like if] this happens will want to cover themselves . Though I'm pretty certain all of these ifs buts and maybes will not be implemented from the stroke of midnight . Quite possible , even logical , people already travelling in the EU will not come under these rules during their current trips .
Dare say legislation for commercial entreprises will be more likely to come under non member rules immediately

From my point of view it was useful and timely information allowing us to apply (if neccessary ) in good time before a trip.

Some of us have already been over here for a few months, info should have been published 12 months ago in my humble opinion

International Driving Permits are required for many countries around the world. The IDP is a translation of your national driving licence and is only valid if you have both together. In some instances agreements have been made to allow the use of national driving licences unsupported by the IDP. This is the case in the EU. From the 28 Mar 19 this agreement with the EU will come to an end and the Vienna Convention Rules will apply. There are 3 conventions made in 1926, 1949 and 1968 and the type of IDP required to drive in a country depends on which convention that country has signed up to. Not all EU countries have adopted the latest 1968 version. For most countries the 1968 version will suffice but a few such as Spain require one of the others.

Full details can be found here including which countries accept which version.
International driving permits for UK drivers from 28 March 2019 - GOV.UK

The 1968 version can be obtained from Post Offices from 1 Feb 19. You need a passport photo, your original driving licence, ID and the fee of 5.50. The RAC and AA will cease issuing IDPs of any type after the 31 Jan 19

Only two according to the AA, unless you need to go to Liechenstein.
And why wouldn't I want to visit the country where my old boss hid his stash. At the moment I can drive throu Liechtenstein without let or hinderance.
p.s. It should also be pointed out the the EU has agreements with many countries around the world, which means IDP's are required for other countries not just the EU when we leave until such time as we negotiate new agreements.

Well we sail to Spain on Saturday and were not planning to return till April, will have to keep a close eye on developments as we may need to return before the 29th March then.

I'd just pay the fine if I got stopped in your circumstances. Why spoil your holiday for a few Euros?
