Bt fon

I use BT Option 1 for my internet (the cheapest option) I also have subscribed to BT FON so I can try to get internet access around the country.

As I am limited to 10Gb download per month, if I try to save say a few BBC I Player programs, I really eat into my allowance.

However if I log off my router and log on to the BT FON service that my router is offering the world, I have almost unlimited download capacity.

Now it might be a little slower as BT FON can only use a 0.5 meg maximum of your available bandwidth, but if time doesn't matter, it's for free.

As the download speed for I Player is quite slow anyway, you might not notice the difference.

As it's your own router, you get good signal strength etc.

If you're careful with money (read tight), it will allow you to do downloads without risking going over your limit.

I forgot the other day and must have used the web for over an hour before I realised I was still on FON, didn't notice the reduced bandwidth.

Hi Pete,

Just a few minutes ago, I logged on to BT and have switched to them from Sky. The 10 gig per month broadband is 5 times what Sky gives.

The main reason for cancelling Sky is that they put up the costs of their phone calls by quite a lot a few months ago. Another bonus is that I can use the FON network while on the road and I intend buying a long range wifi aerial to help.

I will now get free calls to UK landlines instead of Sky charging me for them during the day and adding on a 12.5p connection charge every time I make a call.

The beauty of it is that BT handle the changeover, I do not need to contact Sky at all.

If you want wifi antennas, I am a Solwise reseller, don't make much on them, but these days a couple of quid is better than none.

They do the excellent Solwise Rocket, add the optional sucker kit and it sticks to the side of your vehicle. Not recommended while traveling.

Will improve the reception of FON. PM me for more details.

I'm a bit sad (so my wife says) I've got much higher gain antennas so I can extend the range, but it's much more fiddly to set up. More toys and I like to beat the system.
