I'm totally disgusted with the mindless vandalism, Looting, and anarchy seen in the centre of Brum last night. However, as its said, "It's an ill wind that blows no one any good", there's going to be a load of good stuff going cheap on eBay soon.

It's a worry that it is just mindless vandalism & theft. I think the police have already lost the initiative they should have took more control when it first started. It is now very difficult as it seems that some of these 'riots' to be organised to cover theft, it is nothing to do with any legitimate demonstration. Personally I would like to see marshal law & have the police/army shoot looters on sight, I feel sorry for the decent people who live I these areas but the scum who see throwing bricks at the police deserve any punishment they get.

Turn the water cannons on them, it would help put out the fires, too!!

It used to be the rule that Looters were summarily executed, shot on sight, as recently as Iraq and New Orleans, that would solve the problem. If that's too harsh, consider the situation here in the 1700s, not enough Prisons to house criminals in, the only alternative was "Deportation", OK, Australia and Georgia are no longer available but there's still the Falklands.

A curfew after 9 p.m and all trouble makers are taken down and arrested or shot and have the water cannon used on them, take them down also with full physical force if need be with the backing of the goverment and the e.u can go and get ****ed with their human rights..................................Oh my god is that the p.c brigade and do gooders on their way to disagree with me........................

I doubt that the ones caught will get much of a punishment, what they should do at least is make them clean up the mess. I would have them dressed in bright coloured overalls clearly marked to show they are criminals, I'm not talking about just community service they should be more like the american chain gangs where they are locked up each night until they have cleaned up the mess they made.

I don't want to see these people imprisoned, I don't want to have to support them with my taxes. Marooning them on a remote island where they can fend for themselves seems a good alternative, as did the deported convicts sent to Australia. I don't want to be too inhuman, I'd let them take a Swiss Army Knife, some fishing tackle and a copy of the SAS Survival Guide, that should do it.

We are now into the third generation of some families who have never worked & will not work to get the life style others enjoy.
Thieving, drug dealing etc is easier & the norm.

Now we have deaths to add to this escalating chaos. According to this mornings news 3 Asian youths have been run down & killed in the Handsworth area.
Apparently they were stood on the pavement with others helping to keep the area safe. The families must be distraught.

I'm sickened to the core by all the mindless violence.

Part of the trouble is the expectations of the young.

They have been mollycoddled over the years by parents who won't say NO.

They just expect everything to be given to them without trying.

Parents who don't expect their kids to pay their way. Even on benefits, the money is supposed to pay for essentials, but parents let their offspring treat it as pocket money.

I'm not just blaming the parents, but this over liberal attitude that has developed over the years has a lot to answer.

My other gripe is that people expect to pay very little for commodities, electricals etc so the business people get it made abroad, moving all the jobs there reducing them here, then there's no work. A vicious circle.

The financial people have been allowed to play with our money and everyone can feel the fallout.

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT ALWAYS. Something has to give

I think everybody is appalled by the behaviour of these people but knee-jerk reactions never get anybody anywhere. I don't think the Human Rights Act or the EU (two totally different things, coolasluck) have got anything at all to do with this. I agree with both Dezi and Bigpeetee that if many families are now in the third generation of unemployment and if parents give in so easily to their kids demands without properly disciplining them then you have a recipe for disaster. The apparant ease with which the rioting and looting have spread demonstrates that there is something bubbling very close to the surface and it won't be solved by demanding the culprits be flogged or transported. Punishment obviously needs to be severe but if we are not to face this kind of thing on a regular basis there has to be a change in attitude - espercially among the parents of these thugs - and that is not going to be easy or quick. At the risk of setting certain people off again, maybe we should be investing more in education - because if the parents won't do it then society has to protect itself by making sure somebody is in place to teach right and wrong. Whatever the solution, it is a long-term one.

We have to change society. Shooting, flogging, or transporting won't solve much in the long term. Treating the disease, not the symptoms is always better.

Welfare culture, lack of fathers in many families, and roaming the streets is a way of life for many.

It's a small step from roaming the streets throwing stones, to throwing stones at a shop and nicking some trainers.

How about bringing back conscription and the birch for a start.

Just heard a radio interview with the father of one of those young Asian lads who was mown down in Handsworth last night - his calm dignity and courage ought to be a lesson to everyone. I doubt that I could be as measured and sensible if it had happened to one of my family. Maybe there is hope for humanity in the midst of all this mindless chaos and knee-jerk reaction.

For three nights I have heard the police say “we are ready” Then they appear to just stand by & watch, or I hear bystanders say “I have been here for 1 or 2 hours watching the looters & no sign of the police.”
I think in these circumstances a real tragedy could happen, in as much that somebody defending his property / loved one will clout one of these morons with something blunt & end up facing a manslaughter or murder charge.

At that point I believe the proverbial will really connect with the fan. In the meantime Cameron talks & the mahem continues.

Short Sharp Shock... thats the immediate deterent. I lived in LA not long after the Watt riots. A friend was a teacher - had kids pulling knives on her in class --- the kids who are causing the mahem are not the ones after an education, no matter how much money you put into education you cant teach the one who dont show up, or who only show up to cause trouble in the schools, then the others cant learn.

Maybe put them each in to share a cell with a hard core criminal for a month . If the punishments are hard and broadcasted in the media, maybe the others will think twice. but I think the courts and sentences will not be harsh enough to deter the mindless yobs. Our society has become much to PC and soft. :(

A Friend just posted the following on Facebook - liked it so much thought I would share it:

Message to all the rioters ........... u wanna be big men and fight to the death , well get your sorry little arses on the next plane to Afghanistan and stand alongside real men , they're called soldiers and they are fighting a war unlike you bunch of pathetic wastes of space .

Justice

The original rioters may indeed be justified as the investigation into the Police shooting has serious questions to answer. The aggressive Police tactics now employed seem to have resolved the rioting. What does remain is open to question, a normal society has 2% underclass, this society through government policy have created 12% of the population in this underclass criteria. No work, low pay, extended school leaving age to 18 to cover up the massive youth unemployment, they are not even allowed to claim benefits for the most part. The Police killing was just an excuse, the underlying causes remain and no doubt these riots will kick off again over another matter soon, until the underlying matters are resolved!
Bankers, MPs, Civil Servants etc are robbing the system blind but little is being done for the underclasses while prices are raised on everything, you cannot squeeze the lower classes, they have nothing in the first place and most of the income is spent on food!

The original rioters have no justification.

The individual shot was a known crook, a gang member & carrying a loaded gun. In those circumstances I would shoot him, if threatened, I certainly would not rely on his sense of fair play, not to pull the trigger first..

Just because you are poor & unemployed "providing of course that you want to work" is no excuse for rioting. Strange that all the rioters I saw were well dressed, had mobiles, & looked well fed.
What we are seeing is young men & women thieving for no good reason but believeing they are untouchable. Its called putting two fingers up to society.
