Motorhome gets wedged under a York bridge | YorkMix

By my calculation the van is about 6 inches too tall.

Letting the tyres down may have been enough

First van I suspect is a rental Yorkshire plates, and a Roller team which just happens to be what Danum rent in Doncaster not a million miles from York indeed on the A19

Channa

No height warnings should be just in feet and inches these days. There are millions now that have never been taught imperial measurements at school and have no meaning to them. When did we supposedly go metric.

They both seem to be heading for the Rowntrees Club Site, which gives instructions to follow the directions given and not follow the satnav because of the low bridge.

And probably millions that were never taught in metric....

Know your height in BOTH or go and drive a standard car

I've often walked into York from the Rowntree park site and gone past that low bridge wondering if any vans have ever hit it as it's so close to the campsite.Seems like it's a regular occurrence.I can't understand anyone that would even attempt to get through there with a motorhome,it's quite obvious there's no clearance, unless they are driving a rental vehicle and couldn't care less.

It`s quite a few years since it last happened but this one on Lytham Road, Fulwood, Preston used to get hit regular with motorhomes and vans :lol-049: :lol-049:

I don.t know why you say couldn,t care less? If they damage a rental
Vehicle it is really going to cost them insurance or not,bet that is not covered by rental insurance.

Typical rental T&C.

"12. Hirer’s liability, insurance
12.1 In accordance with the principles of a comprehensive motor insurance, the rental firm will indemnify the renter from liability subject to an excess of GBP £750 per damage to be borne by the renter in case of damage subject to full comprehensive motor insurance per case of damage. The respective excess cannot be excluded.
12.2 The indemnity against liability described in Subsection 12.1 will not apply if the Hirer causes a loss/damage deliberately or by gross negligence."

So if deemed "Gross negligence" Hirer pays for all damage, otherwise pays £750 excess.

Either way it costs the hirer.

Oh dear, but that bridge is low what were they thinking (or not).
it is very low! Looking at the bridge itself, it has at least another foot available in the middle half (Plenty of bridges use max heights for the middles and exclude the extremes)
I measured my PVC Campervan a couple of days ago and with the roof 'furniture' I am a tad under 3 Metres (so any sign that said less than 10' and I would be VERY wary)

I went into a garage in Wales a few months ago,I couldn't see a height written on the canopy but it looked ok so I eased in slowly to make sure my chimney cleared, after fuelling up I went to pay and mentioned to the guy the lack of height info, his reply was,"that's because you came in the exit"....oops
