Best way to negotiate on new motorhome - advice please...

I'm thinking of buying a new motorhome advertised around £63k, I have a second hand motorhome to trade in that is apparently worth trade around £15,500, I guess this is about right as I could probably sell it for around £18k and a dealer would advertise it for around £22k and perhaps settle for £20,500.
What do you think is the dealers margin on an advertised price of £63k?
Should I keep the trade in out of the negotiation altogether
Is it best to admit the trade in at an early stage
It would be a cash deal if that helps
What advice is out there please.

Thanks, Andrew

Could you get someone else to contact the dealer and ask about a deal on said vehicle, best possible price, for cash with no trade in to find out the answer to your question?

dealer gets about 30% if he doesn't take the vehicles on consignment

best sell privately and do a drop dead negotiation
write to the managing director of every agent for the vehicle [ no big commission for the salesman ]
list exactly what you require
when you get replies take the best 2 or three , write again saying that the quote won't get a sale and would he care to sharpen his pencil [ so to speak ]

of course you might get one quote which is clearly better than the others which is probably the best you will get !
be prepared to compromise a touch on the spec in that case , usually happens when they have a vehicle in stock

When we paid cash for ours in 2002 Brownhills kept trying to get us to take out a loan instead, I got the impression they received a commission on it themselves so they preferred it.
Will the motorhome you want be at the NEC Show because you can sometimes get a better price at shows

You got that right !

£50,000 cash? Clearly a great negotiation point, but try not to look like a bank robber or drugs dealer when making an offer. With all the talk on hear of older folk robbing banks because they can’t afford nursing homes, you might get a knock on your door.

I got a trade in price for my old motorhome. Then advertise it free via caravan club and it sold.I was 3k in pocket .result .The lady that bought mine had a Hymer she was offered 11k px she sold it for 17 k.The lady wanted to pay cash, I said OK but you come to the bank with me and pay the cash in .then she took the van. Also if you can buy close to home as you will almost definitely have several trips for warranty work .

well go to a dealer that you are not dealing with and see what they offer in part ex then decide wether to offer yours on private sale then offer your on private sale for a short time to see if you get any intrest on it and if you do then you are in driving seat as le besset says but do take into account what the dealer is like some are good some are awfull but every one has there ow n opinion

You could take Mr Camoron along with you to the dealers and let him negotiate a deal, it might not be the best but he will try to convince you otherwise.
Seriously I would all ways try and sell privately, dealers will offer you a lot less than any price you should be able to get as they have to make a profit, provide warranties etc and probably have to charge VAT .

30%... gosh, so you're saying he gets around £20k!
I think the max on cars is around 17%.

OK, what I should have said was post an advert on here. With all of the things people might want to know, and some pictures.

Thanks st3v3, I'm a newbie here, is this the correct thread to advertise on please?

I second the comment about buying from a local dealer. Motorhomes are not produced in the same numbers as cars and as they are only one step on from prototypes there are invariably niggles which need sorting. Often they will need to be left a day or two and if the dealer is hundreds of miles away it can be a right inconvenience.

lol some of the advice here is soooo funny ..stick to cake decorating or whatever you do ! ....Best selling private the px ...then negotiating on the van you want to buy. Your van has a trade value , that bears no resemblence as to what you may achieve privately. 101 places you can advertise. I personally never sell on ebay everyone seems to want.summat for nowt.

The dealer has a margin . No PX they will discount the van to tempt you , if you px they use that discount is added to their perceived trade value. its called in the trade an overallowance

How do i know all this ? 23 years Motor trade.

If you can be bothered sell private px. then negotiate on then negotiate on your purchase ....

Not sure where the 17 percent 30 percent margins come from ....if that were the case still be in the job. ....and knocking vans out for fun

Channa

By the way some people don't understand VAT .....the dealer pays tax on the margin ...and tax man benovelent as they arent simply work on purchase and selling price no relief is allowed on reconditioning . Good fun eh

When we brought our new motorhome it was a open weekend for Auto Trail . We went on Saturday saw a Dakota that we liked and sat down with the salesman. we was offered £28000 part ex for our Lunar Roadstar but I wanted £33000 for it and said we would think about it and left the salesman sat down frowning. We went back Sunday about a hour before the showroom closed, saw the salesman and told him we was very interested in the Dakota but we was not budging on our PX price, so he said go and sit in the Dakota and he went and made us a coffee he then said he has spoke to the Auto Trail rep who was still on the premises and will knock us £3000 off the new motorhome and they will now give us £30000 PX for our Luner , so happy days I got what I wanted in the end

I would listen to chana, one thing i can tell from my days in the trade DONT tell them you are paying cash until the deal is sorted as they think you will be buying hp and they get a good kick back from that so its vectored into final price.
Once the deal is closed and the hand shake is done and you penning the sale papers plonk the dosh or cheque on the table and watch the s--t hit the fan,my mate did this when buying a new vw car & the sales man tried to back out once he found he was not going to get kick back from hp but my friend then ask for manager saying the sales man had gone back on his word, well the sale went through & what a red face the sales man had he he.
