We are considering a 10 day January trip to a region of the UK before heading for Portugal. We would prefer to park up evening time in or near to a town or village and not somewhere isolated in the middle of nowhere because of long dark cool evenings in January. Which region of England is considered to have the most motorhome friendly villages and towns? Or are all areas much of a muchness?

We don’t mind car parking fees if overnight sleeping is permitted and we are happy to park up in village side streets overnight where possible giving due consideration to local residents.

Our only UK January experience up until now is Devon and Cornwall so alternatives to these areas please.

Maybe there are clusters of POIs on the map in certain areas ?
My most recent trip to England was mostly in Yorkshire . Would recommend Skipton and Ingleton .
Not in England but regions of Wales have motorhome friendly policies

Yes agree with that going by size of your van every car park in Powys allow you one night in seven to stay and time it right after 6pm its free but don't over stay your welcome like a lot of motorhome owners do that's why they stop us parking for nights

Another vote for the North Yorkshire areas, I’ve been Shuffleing around the Ripley / Harrogate / Pickering / Guisbourour / Consett / Penrith & such like as I can from the beginning of September, I’m back around the Ripley area now for a bit & I’ve had no problems with parking

Not easy

Virtually Nothing in SE England except
Canterbury P&R
Abingdon lorry park.
A few pubs maybe

Wales is OK (Brecon) and as has been posted Powys

NT car park in Cookham Berks (on POI) OK for 1 night (not Sundays)
and Dumbell Pub (Taplow/Maidenhead)
Also pub near Holyport again 1 night and buy food

Was looking at York Harrogate North Yorkshire area so thankyou for confirmation that this area looks suitable for a spot of wilding. I used to live in mid wales so deliberately discounted for the moment and Scotland too far for a shortish trip hence the England only theme. May do Scotland in May when weather better. Would have liked the south east but agree that wilding in this area would be hard work.

Yeah as I suggested maybe just a tad further North than York & Harrogate will Open a lot more choice in spots, I tend to stay away from cities & only go into Towns if I have too, Prefer Villages & Open sparcly populated spaces, But as one can imagine it’s getting harder & Harder by the Month nowadays to find a Good Parkup in the UK as far as Wilding goes, Its BIG ‘Bartering’ currency between my fellow Full Time Livaboards & Myself, Closely followed by Donuts, Home made Wine & ‘Labour’ !

Skipton is good. Public car park at side of canal have dedicated Moho spaces and close to pubs and bars. Friday market good too. Not too far from south lakes also

If you see us around these areas be sure to pop over and say hi, will pop kettle on..

In North Devon overnighting is permitted at Westward Ho!, Great Torrington and Appledore carparks, just remember to buy a ticket.
