according to the weather forcast ,we are going to get a good old battering from sunday night into monday .another pressy from the yanks it seems .hope all your vans stay safe ,and any full timers out there stay safe

We were intending to set off tomorrow, heading for Lincolnshire. Instead, we are setting off today as I do not fancy battling strong winds while driving. It will be a bit of a rush but we should be away by teatime.

The van has a MAM of 5 tons and we have weathered a couple of gales in the past. As long as the van is parked end on to the wind direction, it is fine. In Mallaig last year, you could barely stand up, as it was a real hoolie but we still got a good nights sleep. :D

We are tucked up in the lee of a big sand dune. We got a battering last week with the winds so made sure we have shelter for this lot. No matter which way we pointed last week the wind moved around.

Thanks again for the MMMs Jim I have just finished reading them

Have a safe journey John

Hi John.

We where in Northern france a few weeks ago. Parked behind the dunes. Beware the sand dune turning into a Sand Blast. Lucky for us we had moved inland a bit on the worst day but we went for a Short walk along the beach. Its amazing how much sand can get in place you dont normally give much thought to;):D.

I've got the opposite problem, my camper is only 1200kg which means it drives like a yacht on a windy motorway. Looking at going to Avebury for a few days from Monday, but I'm thinking of back roading on the A38 instead of the M5 and stopping elsewhere on the way (Malvern or Cheddar way maybe) as the spot I use is a bit windswept... I don't want to get seasick in the van. :)

Talking of seasick, hope it calls by Tuesday, the Wife and step daughter are using the ferry to the Scilly Isles...

it blow an hooligan all day yesterday but last night and this morning is a dead calm, the full moon last night was like day light

scotland and the west as far down as north wales and northern england seem to be the places that are going to be affected. with scotland getting the worst of it sunday night and monday .

:p:p:D glad the big man put them big hills up to protect his chosen county:dance:

yes he knew what he was doing , keeps a lot of rubbish from that side from getting over to you lot . just cannot understand why they forgot the border checkpoint on the m62 as you go over the top :lol-061:

Well there are gusts up to 54 mph with 32 mph constant winds in Colwyn bay today and that's in the lee if the hills!!

A couple of tenders to the wind turbines are hove to just of the shore taking what shelter they can on a lee shore.

Makes driving the van interesting!!

Still as it's an offshore wind, the council haven't closed the prom yet, but they're such numpties that they've closed it before with off shore winds mind you, it's a 7.9M high tide at midnight, just a shame that it's not onshore, fabulous waves crashing onto the prom and it might wash away the eyesore of a pier before the council decides to spend millions repairing it!! Estimated at 7.6M but probably closer to 11M.

Nobody fancies blowing it up on bonfire night???

wind etc

We are in Glencoe for another few days ,the wind is not too bad at the moment ,but supposed to pick up anytime now, regards to all be safe.:dance:

Just got back from Anglesey after a windy weekend, there were signs on the Britania Bridge saying no caravans or high sided vehicles due to high winds. Nobody seemed to be taking any notice including me as what is the alternative? I am too wide to cross the old Menai Bridge that is if the width is the overall width including the mirrors or just under if the width is just the width of the van.

well we have just had a rather windy old day ,one or two strong blasts but nothing to shout about , went a bit calm about 5ish but winds seems to have picked up a little in the last hour though .but nothing realy.

You really don't want to be in Northumberland at the moment. I live in the north of the county and where I live is windy at the best of times. Was out at 7.30pm chucking things in the woodshed that had already travelled a fair distance around the garden like potted plants, garden table and chairs, watering cans etc. Believe me - taking the ash bucket out in this type of weather is pretty hard, let alone emptying the damn thing into the bin!! And as for up half a mile up the road - it's like driving through thick fog, going past recently ploughed fields!!

Seriously, Northumberland would not be good for camping/vanning at the mo! :danger:

On the Cumbria coast we have taken shelter tucked in behind a high grass covered sand dune. Yesterday the sea was so rought, it was forming a foam that was blowing over the dune and sticking to the van. Joan went onto the dune top to take some photos and could hardly stand up. We bounced a bit at times with the gusts but were glad of the shelter. This morning, cleaning the interior of the van we have found a covering of sand below any of the rooflights. The windscreen is opaque with salt spray.

Kontiki,

The old bridge at Menai was the only way onto the Island for years, Coaches & HGV's HAD to use it.

Out Kontiki goes through with no problem, wing mirrors out all the time!! Surely you're not wider than an artic?

Wind's died down quite a bit now and become more westerly, that means the sea's up a bit in Colwyn. Tenders still sheltering, looks worse a mile or so out to sea.

The gales weren't anything more than we often get.

My Hymer fits the old bridge(slowly and carefully) though I dont think I would have tried it if the new bridge wasnt closed when I tried to leave the first time I took the van to Angelsey.

Wind not too bad in Cheshire either, at least my greenhouse survived this time.

Iow

Was in the IOW with my daughter a few weeks ago, never heard so much torrential rain... Brought lots of board games to do... Love the sound of it on the roof during the night, weather perked up towards the end, nice and sunny...

My grown up daughter sat in our parked car during a downpour the other day with a daft smile on her face, when I asked what she was doing she said that she love the sound of rain on the roof because it reminds her of camping :)
