For a while I have been wondering about a smell that I thought was coming from my Camper and smells to me like an electrical burning smell. But couldn't find any evidence or a problem and everything is working ok. But was a concern for obvious reasons.

Now in the last few days noticed the exact same kind of smell generally in the front of the house and in the back garden and am wondering if there is some kind of silage that has the same smell? the usual silage smell over the last few years basically smells like s*** and nothing else (and occasionally has driven us inside - the joys of living in the countryside!), but seems different this year?

Anyone know about this and noticed the similarity of smells?

You live too far away from

Westminster so not them..
But maybe SNP ?
:p;):raofl:

Not Silage but burning the old plastic silage covering sheet smells exactly like that

Maybe that is the answer! and would tie up with that kind of plastic/rubber 'cable cooking' smell. Cheers :)

It did seem early in the year to be spreading muck but I noticed some crops such as rapeseed are already flowering.

Sometimes the piss and £$%^ ratio differs, the more piss in the mix, the more acrid the smell.
Although, in my wayward days the piss and £$%^ ratio was more to do with the alcohol v hash ratio!

From ex farmer

As it’s about time for turning cattle out I think it could be slurry spreading time that really can honk.

it's not just a smell, it is a very specific smell though.

(believe me, living in a very windy part of the rural borders I am used to general stinky silage and slurry stink  )

theres summit wrong if the silage smells like slurry, even different slurries smell different , pigs is far worse than cows.

back in the mists of time i worked as a field engineer for a manufacturer of silage and slurry handling equipment. on the odd occasions we were working at the factory our overalls and work coats were banned from the factory canteen .

Well, when I worked on a farm silage was what you feed to your cattle in winter, we made it in huge plastic bags which were gathered & tied with cable ties.

It can also be made in a clamp, then covered with tarps & tyres piled on top.

As previously mentioned, it's probably the plastic being burnt, but we used to save the bags & use them to keep the round straw bales dry for the winter.

Silage smells like slurry? I may live in the Countryside but I have no idea what the difference is between silage and slurry (and no, I really, really, really have no desire to know!)

Illegal Burning

It is illegal for farms to burn plastic in that quantity and they have to take if for disposal that costs money. I am from a farm and never smelt anything like that you describe....go for a snoop. Report the farm if need be as it is not good for the air - and not good for your lungs with nasty stuff being released.

Around here, I think the 2nd point would trump the 1st one. (around here, the Farmers rule over the police in reality).

Been pretty heavy rain for two days so tomorrow I will do the 'sniff' test and see if any smells.

I know the smell cannot be from my Camper as everything is working normally and has never been any current over 4A for more than a second for last 4 days (and that includes when we could smell this burning smell)

probably the police arnt the authority to go to . more likely to be the local district or county council environmental health bods.

as an aside back in the eighties i did contract work on local farms, one year one of the silage clamps i filled won a gold cup for the quality of the silage. even though according to the experts we were doing it all wrong.... long chop with a forage wagon rather than precision chop for those who know the difference.

Who knows who to go to. I don't intend to find out as don't intend to go to anyone. I have zero knowledge of farming (think that may be clear by now?) and I am sure anyone living next door to any illegal burning would do so if they felt it appropriate to do so.

All I aked about is a possible "farming" smell that is like an electrical burning smell. end of.

Silage is fermented cut grass and goes in the front of the coo. Slurry is what comes oot the other end. 😂
