  1. Mosquito repellants

A midge jacket with Smidge on any remaining exposed bits is the best way.
  2. Charging/split charge relay problem

Thanks for replies - looks like I should replace the VSR with a dc to dc charger. There was no habitation battery or charging when I got the camper, so I fitted the wiring and VSR using cabling to take 60A mistakenly thinking this would be the max that would flow from the alternator without...
  3. Charging/split charge relay problem

Yes the 2 x 30A fuses in parallel to give a 60A rating are just after the starter battery cabling to the split charge relay. The starting batteries are connected to the leisure battery via the split charge relay. Once the relay is activated when the alternator drives the starting battery above...
  4. Charging/split charge relay problem

I see Amazon has this Renogy 20A dc to dc charger on offer at £74.099. Are they any good? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Renogy-Battery-Batteries-Multi-stage-Charging/dp/B08QZ44SV6/ref=asc_df_B08QZ44SV6/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=512551656642&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand About the same price as...
  5. Charging/split charge relay problem

Perhaps the easiest solution may be to uprate the wiring and fuse to handle 100 or 125 amp, the split charge relay is rated at 140amps.
  6. Charging/split charge relay problem

It came with 2 starter batteries, and does seem to need them on a cold winter morning to turn the 2.5di engine fast enough to start - obviously no glow plugs to help.
  7. Charging/split charge relay problem

I have just replaced the alternator on my mk3 Transit. Noted it wasn't activating the split charge relay to charge the leisure battery, and found the inline fuses had blown - I put 2 of 30amp fuses in parallel. I assumed there must be a short in the wiring and checked this out, but there doesn't...
  8. The Tardis

This sounds great. Is it a home build or a professional built camper?
  9. The Tardis

There's a lot to like about a small campervan. That one looks quite clever - even appears to have 4 seat belts which would make it as usable as an everyday car as a camper., and so easy to park.
  10. Question

When I had a contract for my workshop fire extinguishers to be serviced, the guy would check the pressure gauge and the flexy hose and nozzle, then turn it upside down and listen for the powder to be running down. All being OK he would sign it off and charge a good deal of money. If you can hear...
  11. Poll: Wondering if I am using my motorhome enough to make it worthwhile owning it

Apart from a few trips away. for us its an insurance because living on an island we can never be sure of getting back should the ferry find an excuse not to run - not a problem with the camper, but a major problem in a car. Also useful for transporting various bits of furniture and stuff. And...
  12. Spare wheel cradle Peugeot Boxer and similar.

The spare wheel on my Mk1 Santa Fe car is a similar drop down carrier, but with the car fitted with a tow bar that is lower than the rear bumper, the supplied jack doesn't lift the car high enough to be able to remove the wheel..... I now carry a suitable block of wood to be able to lift the car...
  13. Fuel gauge issue

I had this problem with my '91 Transit camper. It showed an almost empty tank when it was half full and a half full tank when it was brimmed full. My rather crude solution was to bend the fuel gauge needle to show full after filling up.
  14. LEZ zones (specifically Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead)

Seems like the exemption from being over 30 years old applies to all the Scottish LEZs. Good news for some of us! Agree its all utter bollocks - city air has never been cleaner in the UK, and what pollution there is seems to be the tiny pm2.5s which EVs generate far more than petrol and diesel...
  15. Prep work for fitting wooden cladding

You can get western red cedar used for boat and kayak building. Its very light weight, though pricey - https://www.fyneboatkits.co.uk/supplies/wood/cedar-strips/
  16. LEZ zones (specifically Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead)

I checked with the reg no. for the LEZ now in Glasgow and was surprised that my camper is exempt from the charge as being over 30 years old it is classed as "historic vehicle". For it to be "historic" to be tax free with the DVLA it needs to be over 40 years old, not till another 8 years....
  17. Wild camping positive thread photos needed

New Pentland Ferries "Alfred" catamaran being trialled on the Ardrossan - Brodick Arran run. Its a drive on and turn at the end ready to drive off the same way. A late motorhome had to reverse on. Its not a high speed craft, top speed about 17kts, but smooth. No food or drinks available on the...
  18. 15 minute cities

Duncan Enright the Oxford councillor responsible for this nonsense has said " the plan will go ahead whether the people like it or not", Doesn't sound very democratic to me! Read the comments by those affected by this at the end of the article about it in the Oxford Mail" -...
  19. 15 minute cities

" Most councils are not stopping you from driving your vehicle, but simply banning the largest polluters" This is completely missing the point of the Oxford 15 minute scheme. It doesn't matter what vehicle you drive, you cannot drive from your area directly to another - you have to drive...
  20. 15 minute cities

The girl says it is a 10 minute drive to see her friend, so probably 3 or 4 miles away - thats a long way for a 12 year old girl to walk back from after dark, and possibly not very safe. Under this new scheme it becomes a 30 minute drive - how is this better for the environment or in any way at...
