Reversing camera & sensor newbie questions

Hi all - I posted a question recently here regarding purchasing an L2 boxer/relay/ducato where I was worried about the length. A lot of helpful folks help reassure me and I'm aiming to pull the trigger on purchasing one for a self-build camper conversion. However a few people mentioned the importance of reversing cameras and sensors. I'm trying to find out the best avenue for this, as it seems any used van is unlikely to have a camera that I've seen. I plan on changing the stereo unit to one with carplay anyway, so is there an open format that allows sensors and reversing cameras to work with this, or would I always need a second monitor with a reversing camera? And is one even necessary with an L2 or do folks think I'd be ok with a sensor?

I fitted a rear camera to my bus, best thing ever! To be fair my bus is a wide body & 7.7m long but its very good to have one. I just bought an aftermarket one with its own 7in monitor & fitted it to the dash.

All small children have the ability to teleport directly behind a reversing motorhome.

Don't rely on cameras or sensors for reversing, get someone to watch.

A motorhome reversed into my 1100cc BMW "I'd didn't notice it on the monitor", a small child would not have stood a chance.

I have a rear view camera which I use for checking on my trailer and looking at the traffic behind.

I only did it because it was lockdown and I was bored bought the brake light camera kit off eBay and a wireless sender and receiver off eBay I connected to the reverse wire as I don’t need to use it for a reader view mirror the sensors were already on the van autocruise fitted them

I travel alone mostly, so having someone to watch me back, while being a good idea, isn't always possible....

have you fitted a beeper?
This is a combined light and beeper that replaces a reversing bulb .

Every little helps as they say.

Mine was £25 of ebay and been working for donkeys ears, I would fit a hood over the screen for sunny days, don't buy the monitor with the marker lines.

My bus had a buzzer on when I bought it, but it sounds like a strangled chicken!
Probably going to replace it with a more pleasant sounding version at some point....

Are you sure it's not one of the white noise ones which have been recommended for a few years now.
Apparently safer, but less disturbance to those not in vehicle path.

Yes, that's the very feller! What a horrible noise. Thankfully there's a switch on the dash to turn it off for night manoeuvres.....

I bought the Garmin campa satnav and Bluetooth rear view reversing camera...love it, people say its got a lag when you click on the icon on the satnav, or go into reverse, but We expect everything instantly nowerdays so no issue for me. Its clear and works great and I'd definitely recommend it. Oh and I can detach it when parked up at home for safety.

Why?, I bought a reversing camera for my car which fits in the number plate, I have a neck problem which means that I cannot turn my head to look behind, it is a small car (Fiat Panda) with small mirrors but using the monitor with the marker lines I can reverse up to anything within 1ft and perfectly central in parking bays, I would not recommend marker lines for a camera fitted on the top like yours but in the number plate they are pretty good

Mine are ment to be on the bottom but you can change the orientation to what the brain can work out, mine must be upside down. 🤔

Can't remember which way up mine are, but the picture's good enough for me to reverse to within 2inches of what's behind me...

I have an ancient system which is flawed it is mono and only shows a downward view for 2 metres behind.
Nida gets out and helps .
Ideally I would upgrade to a colour 2 camera system powered by the ignition.
One camera reversing other rear view both visible on a split-screen.
The cost being recouped by avoiding just 1 incident. Plus the feel-good.
Preferably hard-wired.

Our motorhome had aftermarket reverse sensors which had been disconnected and I don't need them anyway. I fitted dual reversing cameras, one like a rear mirror view, the other directly down on the bumper, switchable between the two, so don't need guide lines. Can view them on media unit or Garmin sat nav, both at same time even.
If reversing alone, just go very slow to give people ample warning. I had to back our 7.3m MH alone out of a narrow driveway onto a busy main road in rush hour, I was blind to any oncoming traffic until the cab was clear so just kept going very very slow to show all my clear intentions. But the impatient dickhead car drivers kept swerving around beeping until a normal person finally stopped to let me go. There are a lot of arseholes on the road! 😉
