Hi,
Does anyone here have 8.1 and has got google earth on it.
I was thinking of getting a new computer with 8.1 (ours is old and has xp) but heard that it's hard to download google earth (for browsing POI's of course!)
We've tried to get it with ubuntu with no luck.
cheers
Norma

It has bad press.
unless you need touch screen I suggest you get a non touch screen laptop with windows7
Then google earth
POI FROM HERE.
Everything else you are used to.
Touch screen is great for tablets but limited functionality with Google Earth

I saw the title of your post and my ears pricked up. I run pclinuxos and google earth works well on it. It can be downloaded from the pclinuxos repository and self installs, same as all Linux applications. Google earth should also be available from Ubuntu's repository as well. Did you install Google earth in Ubuntu from an outside source? This would probably fail since you might be missing a number of libraries.

I would expect Google earth to run on Windoze 8 but you would require a lot of memory for both the o/s and the application.

Save you pennies and install Linux on you old xp machine, there is some good posts in this forum and free help is always available both in this forum and in the forum of whichever version of Linux you choose.

Thanks for all that.
Re downloading it on to ubuntu -
The drivers are unsupported and and can't download download drivers from Linux as the pc has no propriety drivers as there is no graphics card. The graphics are built in to the motherboard.
I must add I know nowt about all this, just trying to help my other half who is, indeed, trying to avoid the bloody 8.1 option! He is however starting to lose the will to live....

I have windows 8.1 and google works fine and the poi's are good on it too

Have it on ipad too...and streetview works fine in google earth

Thanks for all that.

Some versions of Linux don't supply propriety drivers by default, some do. The reason I use pclinuxos is because it comes fully loaded by default and if something is missing it will be obtained for you. I know others on there use Mint, maybe they can give you information on Mint and Google Earth. If the PC is up to it, you could try Windows 7, I am guessing a minimum of 2GB of memory will be needed and you seem to have an old machine.

Apparently if you do that then there is some sort of problem with getting microsoft to support it, damn them to hell! He did look into it and can't quite remember what. And they're stopping support for W7 next year anyway...
Now toying with the idea of getting dell to provide a duel boot linux/8.1....!?!?

What many people don't know is that bif you buy any PC with windows 8 (8.1) [Professional version only] Microsoft grants you downgrade rights to Windows 7 Professional.

Understanding downgrade rights

www.misco.co.uk stills sells PCs with Windows 7 pre-installed as do some other companies.
Hope this helps

I upgraded to 8.1 so I could downgrade other parts of win8 (i.e.) with another prog I put my start button back amongst other things , but I run google earth without any problems whatsoever on 8.1

I keep hearing comments about Windows 8.1 being just for touch screens but I run it on my laptop, my netbook, my Wife's laptop and upgraded my Granddaughter's laptop to it and we all love it, you don't have to use the tiled interface, there are several ways to make it look and act the same way you are used to, then you just move your mouse to a corner and you have all the benefits of Windows 8.1 and the 'charms'

My new laptop came with Windows 8 which I tried out but after an hour it became annoying to use, the screen was cluttered and navigating around the applications and settings was confusing. I removed Windows 8 installed my favourite version of Linux and once again I'm a happy wildcamper. I even have touchscreen which is great for playing candy crush

Not entirely true - the important updates (security etc.) will continue until 14/01/2020.

Used Win7 on many machines for a long long time now, and it works well. You'll be surprised at the hardware you don't need to run it. Memory would be the main one as mentioned above.

It appears you like Linux and good luck to you However a lot of people like or need Microsoft products and my post was to inform them of the downgrade rights. Which may or may not be useful to them. Perhaps we are better not mentioning Windows at all !
