TomTom Installation Guide

This guide covers the installation of the BridgeX database into TomTom GO, ONE, Rider, Mobile or Navigator.

BridgeX is a database of 'Points Of Interest', usually known as a POI. A POI database consists of two parts:

1. A file with extension .ov2 (contains latitude, longitude)
2. A file with extension .bmp (contains icon for display)

The low bridge data is supplied to you in four different POI arrangements:

- a single POI containing all the bridges (1 POI)
- a single POI containing all the bridges up to a particular height (1 POI)
- a POI for each bridge height (40 POIs)
- a 'reduced' version with all the bridges of 10' and under in a single POI (26 POIs)

As a starting point, we recommend you install the full POI set.

Step 1. Unzip the BridgeX attachment

Save the BridgeX attachment file to the desktop on your PC, and unzip it to a folder of your choice.

Step 2. Connect your PDA or GO to your PC

Connect the TomTom to your PC using the USB data cable supplied by TomTom. If TomTom HOME starts up, cancel it as it is not needed.

Step 3. Copy the POI files from your PC

Navigate to the folder on the local drive of your PC where you stored the unzipped BridgeX POI files

Go into the 'BridgeX POI Files' folder, and then select (using Crtl-A) and 'Copy' all the OV2 and BMP database files in the folder.

You must only copy the .OV2 and .BMP files - do not copy any folders .

Step 4. Copy the POI files to your TomTom

Open "My Computer” on your PC. You will see 'TomTom' listed under 'Drives with Removable Storage'. Double-click on TomTom to see the folders on the TomTom.

You need to paste the POI files into the map folder.

  • On a GO with an SD storage card, the map folder is on the storage card and is called "United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland".
  • On a GO with an Internal hard drive, the map folder is called "Western and Central Europe".

Click on the map folder to see the contents. You should find files called cline, cname and clist. There may be other POI files also.

Now you can paste the low bridge POI files into the map folder by right-click Paste.

The 72 BridgeX files (36 x .ov2 and 36 x .bmp) are now copied to the map folder. You are ready to use your new database in TomTom Navigator / GO.

Step 5. Display POIs in TomTom

In TomTom, each POI has two settings. One is the display option (enable/disable) that determines if the POI appears on the 2D and 3D maps. The other is the 'Warn when near' option, that generates a proximy alert at a preset distance from the bridge. If the proximity alert is enabled, it will sound whether or not bridge display is enabled.

We recommend that all bridge POIs are enabled for display, and you switch the proximity alerts on or off as required.

To show the bridge locations on Navigator's 2D and 3D maps, they must be enabled for display.

Go to 'Browse Map', 'Options', then tick 'Points of Interest'. This enables the display of POIs on the map.

Change Preferences > Manage POI > Enable / Disable POI > Select POI

This is required for each BridgeX POI file. They are now displayed on your TomTom Navigator 5 screen in both 3D and 2D maps.

Step 6. Set up Proximity Alerts

Choose the distance in yards at which the alert should sound. At least 500 yards is recommended.

Change Preferences > Manage (or Maintain) POI > Warn when near POI

Select each POI in turn
Select the distance for the alert
Select the alert sound
Untick the "Warn only if POI is on route" box

Repeat until all POIs are set up with alerts. This is repetitive but must be done carefully to ensure all bridge alerts are activated.

NB. If you tick the "Warn only if POI is on route" box, then you will not be warned of bridges that you approach if:you have no destination and therefore no route planned.

Note that if a POI display is disabled but the warning sound is enabled, the warning is given but the bridge does not appear on the maps.

Step 7. Set the Height Threshold for Alerts

To trigger alerts for all bridges, whatever their height, all the bridge POIs should have their alerts enabled.

You can restrict alerts to only those bridges that pose a danger - the ones below the height of your vehicle. To trigger alerts only for bridges below a certain height, disable the POI alerts that are abobe the height of the vehicle. We recommend adding a safety margin of at least 6" to the vehicle height. For example, for a 15' vehicle, disable the POI alerts for bridges above 15' 6".

Installation is now complete.

Updating your BridgeX database

BridgeX is a 'live' product and is regularly updated to improve its accuracy and completeness. BridgeX users can download the latest version at any time.

To get the latest version of BridgeX, point a browser at http://www.lowbridges.com/sec_dir/bridgex.zip and enter your email address as username and your surname as the password. Use the details given when you purchased the product - it is case sensitive.

To update your database, copy the .OV2 and .BMP files to your storage card, overwriting the earlier versions. Navigator should not be running during the copy process.

New BridgeX updates are available on the first day of each month.

If you find any inaccuracy or omission in the database, you are strongly requested to us know at bridgex@lowbridges.com. You can send an OV2 file, latitude/longitude coordinates, or a clear written description. The information will be carefully verified before inclusion.

Common Questions

Q. I have installed the POIs but some of them don't show up on the display.

A. This is usually caused by having too many POIs installed. The upper limit of POIs is about 40, but it varies slightly depending on the model or version of TomTom that you have. There are two ways to reduce the number of POIs.

1. You can use a merged POI that combines all the bridges up to and including 10' 0" high into a single file. This reduces the number of POIs from 34 to 24. To use this version, delete all the BridgeX OV2 and BMP POI files from the GO or PDA, and then install the ones in the folder 'Reduced POI version' that is included with the data. The setup procedure for the alerts is the same as for the full version.

2. The POI 'BrX All Heights.ov2' contains all the bridges in a single POI file. This is the easiest to set up but gives an alert for all bridges, whatever their height. If this POI is used, disable or delete the other bridge POIs to avoid duplication.
